The role of a Confirmation Sponsor is not simply an honorary one. To be chosen as a Confirmation Sponsor is a great honor that carries with it great responsibility. It is your role to help form the candidate in the Catholic faith; to be a good role model and to inspire them to live an authentic Catholic Christian life.

Thus, in accordance with the Code of Canon Law (C 872, 874, 892 and 893), the Catholic Church requires the following:

1. Sponsors must be at least sixteen years of age.
2. Sponsors must be Catholics who have received all Sacraments of Initiation (are baptized and confirmed, and have received first communion).
3. Sponsors must lead a life “in harmony with the faith;” thus, must be a registered member of a Catholic Church, attending Mass regularly; and if married, must be in a valid Catholic Marriage.
4. Sponsors  must be someone other than the child’s parents.

If the Sponsor is not a registered member of St. Peter’s, they must provide a letter from their Parish attesting that they meet the qualifications to be considered a Catholic in good standing, as outlined above.
